The Sunflower Showdown takes place Tuesday night, as the No. 13 Kansas State Wildcats host the No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks. This is one of the most famous rivalries in college basketball history, as the Jayhawks have an all-time 293-94 record and have won their last seven head-to-head games.

Still, this is KSU’s best team in years, and odds-makers expect a very close contest with the Jayhawks anchored as slim favorites from two points on the road and Over/Under at 147.5. Here are the top Kansas vs. Kansas State University basketball picks and predictions for January 17th.

Kansas State vs Kansas State picks and predictions

Everything about this competition suggests that we are going to have an exciting story. It is a competitive game, with both teams ranked in the Top 15, and the slightly (statistically) inferior team has the home court advantage. Both teams have generally impressed at both ends of the floor and get along very well with each other in terms of personnel.

Despite the Jayhawks’ dominance this season, they’ve had some very tough games in conference, with four of their last five wins coming by four points or fewer. The Wildcats also know all about close games, with a couple of recent wins against Big 12 opponents (West Virginia and Baylor) coming in overtime.

It’s no surprise that we’ve seen the spread open at just 1.5 and I’m dealing with a margin of victory of less than six pips for whoever gets a W.

Spread analysis of Kansas vs. Kansas State

Kansas was energized, and after losing to No. 9 Tennessee in November, it went on a 10-win streak. However, while the Jayhawks lead the Big 12 standings with a 5-0 record, they are 2-3 ATS, with four of those games.

The Wildcats are just behind them in the conference standings at a mark of 4-1 SU and ATS. They were on a nine-game winning streak until they played #14 TCU on the road on Saturday and lost 82-68.

It was a savage performance by KSU at both ends of the field, with the Wildcats turning the ball over 19 times and allowing the Horned Frogs to shoot 57.7% from two-point range.

These releases were all season, with KSU ranking 213th in the nation in turnover rate (18.9%) and 128th in two-point percentage (48.4% with that number rising to 51.4% in conference play).

That’s bad news against a Kansas team that ranks 44th in the country in opponent turnover and shoots 52.1% from inside the arc.

The Jayhawks’ 16-1 record is even more impressive when you consider that they had the third toughest record in the country according to ESPN and went 6-1 against Quadrant 1 foes.

The Jayhawks have been great on both ends of the floor and are 13th in adjusted defensive efficiency according to KenPom while they are 12th in adjusted defensive efficiency.

The strength of Kansas State’s schedule wasn’t exactly onerous but still highly competitive with the Wildcats going 4-1 vs. Quad 1 and beating No. 7 Texas and No. 21 Baylor on the road.

The Wildcats are 36th in modified offensive efficiency while they rank 40th in modified defensive efficiency.

Kansas vs. Kansas State Over/Under analysis

Both teams play stingy defense and come off games short of 70 points, but they also have plenty of talented offensive players and love to push the pace. The Jayhawks are 65th in the country in average length of possession (16.5 seconds) while the Wildcats trail just behind them at 16.6 seconds.

The Jayhawks are coming off a game where they only managed 62 points, but shot 59.3% from two-point range and turned the ball over just 12 times against one of the highest-ranked defenses in the country in Iowa. They had scored at least 75 points in their previous three competitions, which included two road matches in tough venues.

The Jayhawks have four players averaging double-pointers, led by Wooden Award candidate Jalen Wilson (19.8 ppg, 8.9 rpg) and freshman Grady Dick (14.6 ppg, 48 3PT%).

Forward Keyontae Johnson leads KSU in scoring (18.4 ppg) and rebounds (7.1 rpg) while point guard Markquis Nowell averages 17.1 ppg and ranks second in the nation with 8.5 assists per game.

The Wildcats have held less than 70 points in their last two games, but they’ve scored more than 80 points in three straight contests before that – including a 116-point blast against the Longhorns.
