Anya Taylor-Joy single-handedly shut down Noma with her performance: A-List fans joke the movie is responsible for closing the world’s best restaurant
Menu fans joke that the film is responsible for the closing of one of the world’s most innovative restaurants, after its head chef announced it would close its doors in 2023.
Rene Redzepi, 45, is widely considered one of the best chefs in the world, and thanks to his cuisine, Alchemy Noma has been named best restaurant in the world five times and has been awarded three Michelin stars.
He said his flagship restaurant in Copenhagen, which first opened in 2003, will become a giant test kitchen, dubbed Noma 3.0, in 2024 — only opening in 2025 for short periods at a time.
Farhan: Fans of the menu joke that the movie is responsible for the closure of one of the world’s most innovative restaurants, after its head chef announced it would close its doors in 2023.
In an interview with The New York Times, he said the “unsustainable” nature of the global fine dining scene — requiring long hours in the kitchen and hard-earned high standards, coupled with the pandemic — helped him decide to close the store.
However, the Internet has different ideas, and says Ralph Fiennes’ movie The Menu is to blame.
The dark comedy centers on a married couple, played by Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, who travel to a remote island to dine at an exclusive restaurant run by the slick chef (Ralph).

The film is a satire on the over-the-top cynicism of today’s food and drink, but also the class politics and elitism that often comes with it.
The movie was released late last year, and became available online on Disney+ and HBO Max this month, after which Noma announced it was shutting down.

Fans now joke that the list was “the nail in Numa’s coffin” and at fault for Rene’s decision, and have taken to Twitter to express their amusement.
One said: “The menu appears on HBO Max and one day later the Noma guy announces he is closing the restaurant lol”.
Another echoed: “I firmly believe René Redzepi saw The Menu and realized that’s what people thought of Noma and he was like ‘we’re done’ and that’s why Noma closed.”
A third agreed, writing: “The list comes out on HBO Max, after next week Noma closes. Sometimes correlation doesn’t equal causation.
A fourth sarcastically said: “I can’t believe the list (2022) single-handedly closed Noma,” while another praised: “Anya Taylor Joy single-handedly closed Noma with her performance on the list.”
“Noma’s chef saw The Menu and said it was time to go,” another wrote, while another joked: “You think maybe the CIA put the menu on stream right before Noma came out on purpose?”
One Twitter user noted: “Watching the roster yesterday and watching Noma close today…it’s hard not to connect those two in my mind.”
While another added: “My theory is that René Redzepi saw the list and then decided to close Noma.”
