Registered dietitians agree that these four foods are the biggest culprits in slowing your metabolism by over 40.

One of the most important factors when it comes to losing weight is metabolism. A faster metabolism naturally helps your body burn more fat and increase your calorie deficit. Meanwhile, a slower metabolism will store more calories as fat, leading to weight gain. While your metabolic rate is determined by a number of things, from genes to physical activity to age, the foods and drinks you eat also play a major role. Although cereal is one of the easiest breakfast options to start your day, it’s generally low in any valuable nutrients. Most cereals are also filled with sugar, which can hurt your metabolism. Sugary cereals are “one of the most unhealthy processed foods you can eat,” Vedder says. Added sugars have no nutritional value and lead to empty calories that wreak havoc on your metabolism.

“It’s loaded with sugar, sodium, and refined carbohydrates,” he continues. “These things, when eaten in large and consistent amounts, can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Highly processed and refined ingredients usually give you an energy boost as they can be digested very quickly. This then causes a drop in blood sugar.” And it can slow down your metabolism.” So while nutritionists like Vedder warn against sugary cereal, you don’t have to give up dessert in the morning. Instead, overnight oats. Topped with maple syrup or peanut butter for a naturally sweet flavor, it’s a great breakfast that won’t hit your blood sugar and will keep you full for hours.

This is due to the unhealthy ingredients often found in fast food (which also happens to taste as good as it gets!).

Vedder warns against eating fast food on a regular basis. “Fast food meals are made with loads of unhealthy fats, sodium, and oils. This can also lead to weight gain, obesity, cardiovascular disease, heart disease, and stroke to name a few,” he says. “The ingredients in fast food meals are also highly processed and refined which can be quickly digested and leave you with a lowered metabolism.” One of the best things to do is to easily succumb to the temptation of junk food. This way, you already have your food for the day planned. Vedder maintains that it’s still OK to enjoy a McDonald’s burger or French fries — just don’t make it a habit!

While it may feel great to just grab a donut and head out the door, this tasty treat does very little to satiate your appetite and can mess with your metabolism. “Not all muffins are created equal, and most are full of refined carbs, sugar, and fat. While there are some muffins that can help you achieve your health goals, that’s unfortunately not the case for the most popular,” Al-Afdal says. Similar to cereal, you don’t want to start your day with a meal that only temporarily gives you an energy boost.

While there are healthier muffins, such as oatmeal or bran, delicious chocolate chip and berry (unfortunately) are usually full of sugar and refined carbs. They don’t actually nourish your body or provide any real benefit to your health. “The ingredient list for muffins typically includes flour, water, eggs, butter, and sugar along with chocolate chips and possibly blueberries. Eggs and berries are the two healthiest ingredients, but when paired with other calorie-dense foods on the list, the nutrient quality is basically negated.” Best explains.

Many frozen dinners are full of refined carbohydrates, sugar, and trans fats that won’t do much to improve your health or keep you satiated for long. Frozen dinners typically contain “too much fat and salt to make them taste good as well as keep them tasting,” Feder says. Too much fat and salt can lead to weight gain, obesity, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. So, look out. About microwave meals that contain vegetables and a solid protein source. To lose weight, give your body energy and get your metabolism going faster, you should eat a varied diet rich in macro and micronutrients. It is important to avoid foods such as sugary cereals, fast food, cookies and frozen dinners as they slow down the metabolism. Instead, try some of the healthy alternatives listed above.
